Foundations of Racial Equity Workshops

In 2023-2024, Stepping Stone is collaborating with the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services to offer 4-hour Foundations of Racial Equity trainings for all 1200 of their staff. This is part of DHHS’ larger commitment to advancing racial equity, and an innovative effort to build the capacity of racial equity facilitators, consultants, and champions on the North Coast. We are excited to introduce our incredible team of sub-consultants/facilitators for this project.

sharrone blanck

Sharrone is the Equity & Inclusion Learning Specialist for Humboldt County Office of Education and co-founder of Equity Partners, a consulting group focused on advancing racial equity in PK-12 schools. She was the President of the Eureka NAACP, is a founding member of B-Black/Building Black Community, and serves as a community support for the All-Humboldt Black Student Union. She also spent 15 years working in early intervention, supporting young children with special needs. Sharrone has lived in Humboldt County since 2015.

sarai bordeaux

Sarai Bordeaux is a poet, educator and facilitator from across California. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from CalPoly Humboldt and a Master’s Degree in Education: Equity and Social Justice from San Francisco State University. Her favorite activities are hiking and camping, cooking and making funny noises at cute animals. She is so happy to be back living in Humboldt County and hopes there has been something beautiful about your day.

malcolm chanaiwa

Malcolm is a passionate advocate for justice. He believes we all have a part to play in making our communities more just and welcoming. He is from Los Angeles, but lived in Arcata for nine years, graduating from CalPoly Humboldt in 2017. When he’s not facilitating conversations about equity and justice, he serves as a substitute teacher (grades 1-12) in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He is excited to work with this great team.

cass crawford

Cass supports young adults in the workforce development program at the McKinleyville Family Resource Center. Prior to this, they received their BA in Geography from CalPoly Humboldt, served in AmeriCorps, and worked at local elementary schools. They are now attending CalPoly Humboldt as a Master’s in Social Work graduate student. They are interested in systems change, racial equity, gender studies and mental health, and in learning how to navigate this work as a white person. Cass spends their free time reading, playing video games, crafting, taking walks and gardening.

iva dubyak

Iva is a life-long learner committed to dismantling racism and agitating harmful power structures. They formerly developed anti-racist training curriculum at Humboldt Area Foundation and facilitated racial equity workshops through the Equity Alliance and the Northern California Association of Nonprofits. Now living in Oregon, Iva is the Culture & Operations Manager at a food justice nonprofit and has recently become obsessed with a local donkey sanctuary. In September, they’ll become a Licensed Massage Therapist, focusing on trauma-informed care and pain relief..

jennifer eichstedt

Jennifer is a white queer woman who has lived on the North Coast for 25 years, serving as a professor of sociology at CalPoly Humboldt. She has been a teacher and facilitator on racial equity for the last 25 years, and is deeply committed to creating racial and social justice.

monique harper-desir

Mo Harper-Desir is a Queer, first generation arts educator and activist from Western Massachusetts. Mo has a background in arts for change, education and media and creates using visual arts. Mo is a mother to two free brown boys and considers herself a caretaker to her community. You may see Mo working with grassroots organization Black Humboldt or consulting with her micro-business Mo HD Creates.

melissa meiris

Melissa is a co-director of Stepping Stone Consulting. Her background in this field spans higher education — she was Associate Director in the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at CalPoly Humboldt for 5 years — as well as environmental education, which have informed her philosophy as a skilled facilitator, dedicated educator, and committed collaborator. She holds an M.A. in Education–Equity and Social Justice from San Francisco State University. Melissa loves surfing, hiking, gardening, cooking, and reading.

neftali miller-rubio

Neftali has worked at the County of Humboldt since 2018 and began her role as Racial & Cultural Equity Manager at Department of Health and Human Services in 2022. Neftali is Coastal Band Chumash with a mixed-race background and was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. She moved to Humboldt county in 2017 after completing her Master’s Degree in Public Administration from San Francisco State University. When she is not at work, she enjoys doing projects around the house or getting outside with her family.

holly rae

Holly Rae is a mother of four and a graduate student at CalPoly Humboldt. They graduated with a degree in Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies in 2023 and find hope in talking about important topics in community spaces. They are a poet, long distance stroller, and a huge fan of daily naps.

GEORGINA CERDA SALVARREY

Georgina is a first-generation immigrant woman of color. She identifies as an enthusiastic and committed feminist activist from Mexico. She has an interdisciplinary academic background in science and education and extensive experience in critical and feminist pedagogies. Georgina is also a teacher and feminist organizer.

aristea saulsbury

Aristea is a co-director of Stepping Stone Consulting, with a passion for facilitating conversations that bridge communities. Key to this work is her experience in early childhood education (as Director of Humboldt Educare Preschool) and nonprofits. With a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Change, Aristea leads processes for organizations throughout the North Coast that pay special attention to historical context, lived experiences, and data.

holly scaglione

Holly holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work and has over 20 years of service and leadership experience in community work, healthcare, and social services. She lives, plays, and works with her family and community on unceded Wiyot Land. She is an advanced Equine Guided Education (EGE) Coach and Trauma-Sensitive HeartMath Practitioner. As founder, educator, and facilitator at Spirit Horse Education, Holly works at the intersection of somatics, experiential learning, and collective liberation — all guided by her deep relationship with horses, nature, and herself.

Greetings from Crescent City! As a transplant from the Central Valley, California area, Bonnie is proud to be a part of a community that has welcomed her and her daughter since day one. Her life experience and curious mind have helped inform the way she sees the world, and she is happy to advance those learnings toward a more equitable and just life-experience for the most vulnerable folx. Land. Bread. Justice. Peace.

beth wylie

Beth is committed to collective healing and community empowerment to dismantle the impacts of racial social injustice. Through her work as an educational leader, she seeks to listen and follow the needs of those whom the organization serves. With a deepening of praxis in antiracist, abolitionist education, she continually examines her own contributions in order to demonstrate her commitment to the advancement of education as an act of freedom. Beth currently serves as the Director at Fuente Nueva Charter School, is a board member of the West Side Community Improvement Association, a musician, and a Kinetic Sculpture co-team leader.
